3rd Grade Lesson - Magical Madison Cityscapes

In this collaborative 3rd grade lesson, students created a cityscape to represent where they live, but with a magical twist. They used collage to recreate landmarks and buildings they know in their town, but they can add  imaginative elements. The students worked collaboratively in groups to map out their cities and create buildings to represent and get to know Madison, WI. Here you can see the slides that were used to introduce the first day of the lesson as well as the student groups' finished products.

3rd Grade Unit Plan - Art and Community

This 3rd grade unit plan invites students to think about the different levels of community they participate in. The "big idea" is that public art can make our community better. Starting with the classroom community, students study the French street artist, Invader, and create mosaics to hide around the room. They then zoom out of the classroom to the school community, where they collaboratively yarn-bomb the main staircase. Finally, the students make watercolor "treasure cards" to place in Little Free Libraries around their town's community. Click through the gallery to see teaching samples and individual lesson plans for the unit.

Mindfulness in the Classroom - Brochure

After doing research on student and teacher mental health in schools, I put together this brochure advocating for teaching mindfulness in the classroom. It offers solutions to the modern classroom based in research, and encourages mindfulness for both teachers and students.

Educational Board Game - Design Thinking

TEAM BULBLY FINAL POSTER.jpg

As part of a course called Design Thinking for Transformation, I worked with a team to create a board game for elementary schoolers designed to reduce bullying and stigma regarding individual differences. The game rewards things like helping a friend, or making someone laugh, rather than rewarding a win over another player. We used the design thinking process to conduct interviews and do prototype testing with local elementary school students. On the left is the poster I designed to explain our team's work, which depicts the game board, cards, and instructions for play. The game board was made using a laser cutter and the pieces were 3D printed. Find more info and free downloads of the materials here.
