Show Statement:
When I start drawing a bird, I don’t know how it will turn out. As I draw, the left wing might turn out too big, so the feet have to get smaller. That’s okay. I can let it show up. It's what I’m learning to do when I stand on the shore of Lake Michigan and the only other people around me are birds. The birds teach me how to be receptive to change and flow with the seasons. So I draw with curiosity, rather than control. It’s like flying on a wind current thousands of miles south for the winter with no map. My body knows what to do.
The installation resembles an altar, offering a site to attend to your inner world. The world you find when you drop your shoulders and unclench your jaw as the air leaves your nose. The world where you meet the parts of yourself that have been quietly forming, waiting until you are ready. Practicing receptivity to this inner home helps me find something more curious, more true, and more alive in everything, and in me.
